Michael Phelps barely escaped death today at the London Olympics after nearly drowning during a photo shoot at the Olympic swimming venue. Phelps was asked to wear his 20 Olympic medals and stand along the edge of the water when he slipped into the pool and was dragged to the bottom by the weight of the medals. It took quick action by his teammates to pull Phelps out of the pool.
“Thank goodness my teammates were there,” said Phelps. “It was such a freak thing, I didn’t realize how heavy those medals are,” he added.
Phelps who won his record smashing 20th medal yesterday, told friends it would be the last time he puts on all the medals at once. “I’m kind of afraid of those things now,” he was heard to say.
